700,000 Domains and more to come!!!

We have just passed the 700,000 domains hosted for our organization. This includes Bluehost, Hostmonster, and Fastdomain. We are now in the top 2, if not number one, fastest growing shared hosting company in the world. We will very soon be hosting more than 1,000,000 domains.

Since the new year is fast approaching, let me give you some predictions for Bluehost and our other brands for 2008.

#1 – We will begin aggressively promoting individual domain name sales, especially through our fastdomain brand. We want to put the HURT on Godaddy. Godaddy’s incessant obstacles to transferring domains and extremely poor customer service will allow us to take a TON of their customers. My personal goal is to take more than 1 million of their customers in the next 24 months – Keep watching! I will make it happen!!

#2 – Fix our “CPU exceeded errors” that many of our customers have been experiencing. The one problem keeps me up at night more than anything else. We are working extensively through software and hardware means to virtually eliminate this problem for the “legitimate” user.

#3 – Finally get together a VPS option to sell to our customers that outgrow our setup. We have wanted to do this for a long time, but have never felt the products were good enough in the VPS space. My opinion of these products has changed as they have worked to make them better. I would like to implement VPS as a full fledged member of our product family.

2008 will be a defining year for us. We will either catapult ourselves to the front of all hosting companies or will falter and grow, but miss our chance to take the lead in this industry. Time will tell where our will and desire will take us during the next twelve months! Thanks for sticking around for the ride!

I moved my site because of this, too little, too late. The funny this is, we (our gaming group) have a dedicated game server through Hypernia.net, and they offer a FREE shared hosting account with every sign-up.

We’ve been on there Linus servers for a month, without one single error, Bluehost better fix the CPU Exceeded bull or they will go down hard.

Almost 4 years with BH, every year, worse performance, if 20 people would get on our phpBB forum, we would get the errors. I’ve had over 75 users logged on now….no problems.

FIX YOUR SYSTEM(S), AND STOP THINKING ONLY ABOUT NEW SIGN-UPS!

    Ex-Bluehost User.

You have no idea how happy I am to see you address the CPU exceeded errors. I began getting those this past year and they got really bad in the past few months. I searched the forum for information and left without posting, mostly because your moderators there are so rude.

Please tell me that their responses to customers with the CPU problem are not sanctioned by Bluehost. They’re volunteers, right? I’ve sung Bluehost’s praises every time someone asks about hosting companies and I’d hate to think that the forum moderators are echoing Bluehost policy, especially in these two posts:

    http://www.bluehostforum.com/showpost.php?p=45086&postcount=5

    http://www.bluehostforum.com/showpost.php?p=45099&postcount=15

I think it’s those kinds of replies from your moderators that would explain why so few people have complained there.

What I’ve seen most frequently (if not always) is “the leading” companies having the worst customer service…do you believe you can be “the leading company” and still have a great (not just good) customer service?

VPS sounds great. Also taking care of #2.

Matt, any idea when this CPU thing is going to be addressed? I’m blogging to be heard. I want people to read what I write. Yet, everytime I write something that appeals to more than 30 people in a day, I get CPU errors. Are the mods at the forum correct when they imply that Bluehost wants only websites that get little to no traffic?

I can’t grow my site and increase my readers if people are seeing CPU errors every time I write a noteworthy article. I’m getting frustrated. Please tell me what is being done and when I can expect better service.

  6. Andy Snook says:

Is there anyway to sign up for “interest in VPS” at bluehost, so that perhaps when you get round to sorting it out, people can sign up straight away?

  7. Keith says:

I have been a Blue Host customer for a grand total of two and a half days. Today, I experienced my first “Exceeded CPU Quota” error. I has shocked and pissed. There were a total of six users on the site at the time!

I was previously with a different host. I was not happy with them for several months but did not want to change hosts before Christmas. (I have a shopping site.)

With my old host, I my service was never suspended due to exceeding CPU quota – not even during the busy Christmas selling season.

Did I jump out of the frying pan and into the fire?

I just transferred my domains off Bluehost because I couldn’t take the constant CPU exceeded errors. I guess uploading 50 pictures to my Gallery2, once every month posed a vicious CPU threat to the other 1000 domains on my server.

I just can’t believe that for 2 full years, Bluehost never got around to fixing this back-breaking problem.

I’ve been happy with Bluehost – only had 1-2 issues so far. But I would agree with others here that I’d like to see more for existing customers – existing issues addressed instead of this constant gloating about attracting new customers.

  12. lami says:

You’re crazy but I like that… It’s all good as long as you resolve some of the issues you have now.

  13. John Draper says:

Most of my sites are low traffic and probably fit the profile that Blue Host wants – I’ve never seen a CPU exceeded error. But I just signed up a customer who has fast growing traffic – well, fast to me – 300 a day after 2 months! Is that high? – nobody will say what “high traffic” is? There’s an active Word Press blog and active guest book and maybe 60 HTML pages. Anyway, if the traffic keeps growing I may have a problem – so where do I go to get more capacity but still the great Blue Host service? Seems like VPS would be the answer.

    Matt,

Sounds like a great plan. I’m a long time BH customer and have brought many others to BH. In a recent ticket exchange it seems like the BH support team needs some more time to meet the objectives you outline in this posting. The text of my correspondence is attached. Please don’t take this as a complaint, BH continues to be the best in all aspects including customer care, I continue to be ready to move in when BH is ready for me…

    Best wishes, _Bob

    BH,

Long time customer & have sent many your way. Can you upgrade my recently renewed account to the “new customer” limits of 600GB? I don’t use a fraction of it but I would like to have all the BH functions I can…

In the CEO blog I see VPS is on the way & you want GoDaddy transfers. I have a dozen or so domains over at GD with “free hosting” and such… If you want them make an offer and I’ll move on over.

    Summary:

Request full customer storage / BW

    Request early adopter VPS

Request terms for bulk transfers (~10) domains & what would be provided for them.

Thanks for all the great service. Look forward to BH 2008!

    Hello,

    Request early adopter VPS

We don’t have this at all. At this time we only have shared hosting and there have been no planned changes to our hosting at this time. sorry about that.

Request terms for bulk transfers (~10) domains & what would be provided for them.

unfortunately we don’t have a way to bulk transfer domains to us. we do this for two reasons,

    1) we don’t want mass overloading of domains on hosting accounts all at once. if it takes a little time to add on the domain customers are less likely to put superfluous domains on their accout and it improves server performance.

    2) we have a problem with people attempting to add domain’s they don’t own, or are attempting to mimic, (people have attempted to put google.com on our servers) we need to limit this as much as possible. that’s why we have the security checks on the server when you add the addon domain. we know it’s a pain, but it saves us from lawsuits, which save the customer money.

We are allowing accounts to upgrade, however we just ask that one small requirement be full filled before we upgrade the account.

Since 300 GB is a lot of space, most people never reach 10 GB of disk usage. Since upgrading the account means migrating your account to a new server and having the site down for 24 hours, we require that you have used at least 100 GB of your current alloted space and then we will move you to the new 600GB rate. If you demonstrate that you need the 600 GB we will be glad to switch you to the new servers, until then we politely ask that you continue on the rate that you have and when the time comes we will migrate you to the new plan.

However if you desire we can raise your bandwidth to the 6000 GB rate at any time, please just provide the password or last four digits of your credit card you used at sign up and we will be happy to upgrade that immediately.

    Thanks.

“areidmtm” is simply an … – he has never shown anything other than contempt for forum posters and single-handedly has been responsible for numerous defections from Bluehost and an untold loss of revenue from folks who never signed up once they ran afoul of his ‘tude.

I’ve spoken personally to you, Matt, in the past wrt this individual, and was assured he’d be corralled, corrected or canned. That obviously never happened – and I can only assume he’s family (or something), because I’m sure you wouldn’t allow a moderator to so badly (mis)represent Bluehost unless dear old aunt Hattie was holding a gun to your head, insisting you keep little Johnny on the job – or you’d be cut out of her will – and I understand she holds the controlling interest in Bluehost ;-)

Either that, or the 700 (out of 700,000) customers he’s managed to alienate, really are just seen as a drop in the rapidly expanding bucket, and not to be concerned about – there are a lot more sheep joining up who don’t complain about anything. I don’t think that’s the way you do business, but I’m really hard pressed to explain this situation – I mean moderators are a dime a dozen (they are volunteers after all) and just as when fishing – if you catch an immature one, you throw it back and pick a trophy winner from the teeming masses willing to do the job right.

And yes, it is a volunteer job, and yes there are some really decent moderators, who give up a lot of their free time to be extremely helpful on the forums – so why allow a couple of bad ones, sour the general impression folks get of Bluehost from reading their posts.

CPU issue should be considered as number one priority. Also, can’t wait to see VPS options.

  18. Jason says:

    Matt,

Any way you could think about supporting subversion on your shared sites? That really is one of those things that should also keep one up at night. Giving good support for versioning software is one of those things that developers appreciate. I have always admired the customer service that Bluehost provides. It is second to none. But the lack of this one feature has me considering moving several sites that I maintain on BH.

  19. Dave M says:

    Matt,
I’m not sure why I (as a user of your services) should be excited that you’re planning to grow. It doesn’t seem to help me, and I’m concerned about the quality of service I’ve received recently.

I’d prefer to hear how you’re planning to improve the customer experience. I don’t see any reference to email latency as a problem you’ve focusing on.

And the ticket I opened two days ago for this issue hasn’t seen any BH activity yet. So I guess customer service against tickets is the other place I’d like to see you commit to focus on in your “top 3″ list.

Right now, I can’t recommend BH. And while I wait on the phone, I’m looking for other potential providers.
    Thanks,
    Dave

BlueHost was a great host until the “CPU Exceeded” error messages were imposed. And then you made it worse by increasing the suspension from a couple of minutes to five minutes! My website comes up for renewal in one week. I am already gone, and have switched to LunarPages.com since they do not impose hard CPU limits. FIX THE PROBLEM, Matt!

  21. Matt, I do hope you are serious about the CPU error problems. Two years ago I moved all my personal sites to Bluehost, moved my company website, and encouraged all my friends to move … all without any affiliate reimbursement, just goodwill! I like your service and the Cpanel backend, but it irritates me to no end to deal with the CPU Exceeded Screen of Death, especially on our nonprofit website that, this time of year, can serve up to 100+ visitors a minute looking for hiking information. We’ve had four of these already today just because of volume, not script issues. I’d happily pay more for VPS to remove the embarassment of not being available for our visitors. Thanks and keep us posted… SOON!

  22. Angel says:

Excelent Matt. VPS will give you great results and you going to have to many happy customers.

  23. Congratulations Matt. I am really looking forward to another alternative to godaddy in the industry. Cheers!!

Hey Matt when are you going to add more domain exstensions?

  25. Success in any business will not happen overnight. It still requires time and work to get your affiliate marketing strategy up and running. Nevertheless, if you are determined, decided and prepared to give it your all, affiliate marketing can be the perfect career chance for you.
