My second wind…

I have been doing hosting for almost 10 years now. I can’t believe it. It really only seems like a few years when I think about it. During that time I have started three hosting companies (Actually five if you count hostmonster and fastdomain as separate businesses which they are) and sold two of them (, and

Bluehost and Hostmonster are my primary focus, but I do have other businesses that take some of my time ( as well as real estate interests. The past couple of years have been interesting for me. Health concerns have held me back more than I care to admit and often times I have “sprinted” for a couple of weeks and then took time off to get ready to go again. I hope to put those issues behind me soon.

For the first time in a while I really feel ready to get out there and start crushing the competition again. Anyone who knows me knows I’m at my best when I’m obsessed with winning. I’m ready to start obsessing again :) I’ve been scheming and plotting knew ways to get a LOT more signups each day. I’m very excited to work on kernel changes and improve technical advances in shared hosting. In addition, I just purchased a 50,000 sq ft buliding to move our business into and will begin construction on our own data center in a few months. When the new data center is in place we might actually get around to doing VPS hosting as well – If we do, watch out! Our VPS method of doing things is different from what others envision and will be VERY good.

I guess I finally got my “hosting second wind”. Its about time! I thought I was getting too bored with hosting, but it turns out I’m just getting started.

    I just bought a domain from bluehost today. I found your blog randomly. I just went to Google news and typed “Bluehost” and read a recent blog about how you guys now have reached 1,000,000. Congratulations!!! :-) So while reading the blog I saw your name was mentioned and I just typed Matt Heaton into Google search and this was the first link that popped up. Anyway Congratulations and good luck on your 50,0000 sq ft building. My website hasnt been uploaded yet. But if you want the link, its It wont be up until probably early or mid August.

    while back 2-3 months, I also tried to contact simplescripts,
    and nothing…

    I look forward to seeing what new stuff happens at Bluehost. I’ve been hosting some of my sites with bluehost for about a year and have been pretty happy. I do think you could improve the signup process by improving the “sell” on your homepage. Maybe that will be part of your second-wind-work.

    I have the same experience with Simple Scripts. I tried the feedback form and so far no news on what is the outcome.

    Apparently, there are problems with Simple Scripts upgrade where it will terminate if the backup is too large.

    Either this is a Bluehost or Simple Scripts issue and no one can get me an answer so far. If I cannot figure out soon, I am going to drop Simple Scripts.

    If Bluehost offers VPS’s at a competitive price, I will sign up on DAY ONE.

    However, I hope you will not be hands off about security on VPS’s, like many companies. I’d recommend offering an additional subscription services that would provide a dedicated ‘security agent’ who would perform periodic security audits and be available by phone in crisis. Not an offshore team, but a single person (or three people, max, for 24 hour coverage) I can call when needed. I can’t find a company that offers this reliably at any reasonable price, and I’m away that these kinds of specialists are worth $100+/hr.

    I have been complaining often on this blog about how Bluehost has no growth path. I hope I helped motivate you.

    Good luck with the VPS – that’s the right direction.

    I would have to suggest that you apply your simplescripts tool to the VPS and make a service that bridges the gap between full control of the server and a cpanel account. This way you can market to the growing customer, not just the grown-up customer. That’s where you should be aiming.

    I live in Spain and I was wondering if you ever thought in providing a service in Spanish. As an affiliate it would be easier for me to bring you customers.

    You already have Blue from Bluehost and Green from Host Monster, you could use Red for your Spanish version 😉

    I would LOVE a VPS solution (and in the future – a dedicated server solution?)
    from bluehost. Our site is (unfortuntely) starting to hit the wall of “exceeding cpu usage” etc…and it would be great to be able to simply move the site to a bluehost VPS.

    You have created an outstanding company, with outstanding customer service . The people in your employee seem to care for a great deal. As a customer for several years and as an affiliate I have consistently found the best service from you and your staff.

    I do hope that when you get to the point that you are offering VPS, you send out some notice and explanation of services and features to us as affiliates so we may be able to represent the product better to our clients.

    As usual Bluehost is a pleasure to deal with. Thanks much for your dedication to quality and service.

    I don’t expect that you will allow this post here but I have to say that I am very disappointed with you and with your company. I moved to BlueHost 6 months ago. I host a Joomla-based site. One day, you guys shut down my site. I am glad I used your mail server because otherwise I would have never know you shut me down. The problem is that when you shut down the web server, you also shut down my mail server so the mail notifying me of the problem could not be retieved. Someone didn’t think through that scheme very well. So, I called in and your people said I was the victim of a Phishing attack. I found the offending script and removed it immediately. It reappeared and the next time we reviewed all of the site permissions and everyone (including your techs) felt that we had nailed the problem. Then, the site went off-line a third time. I called in and was transfered to your abuse department who said that it was too late, I was kicked off Bluehost and I had 15 days to gather my belongings. There was no discussion, no appeal I was just done. I tried to go through the issues with the abuse representative. He would not engage. If I asked a question like “What could I have done differently”, he would only reply in a condenscending tone with a retort like “What makes you think it’s my job to answer that”.

    Mark, this is just unprofessional and very discourteous. I can’t imagine that this is the type of behavior that you condone but honestly, I’d now googled for BlueHost reviews and sadly, my experience is very typical.

    Since then, I’ve move to a new hoster. Everything is great and I’ve had no purported phishing attacks within my code.

    If you are a good person who genuinely wishes to run a quality ethical company, then I guess I’ll see this post on your blog. If not, it will be my personal confirmation that the practices I (and many others) have observed from you company are practiced designed by and condoned by you.

    It’s great to be abitious and ‘clobber the competition’. Perhaps honest and ethics are old fashioned notions that have no value to high rollers. Perhaps if you hold ethics in any regard, I’ll see this post on your blog and there will be some changes at your company.

    Just an update for everyone that when I was kicked out of BlueHost I went to Lunarpages. I’ve now been on Lunarpages for a very long time and I have to say that they are reliable, professional and very ethical. I am sure there are many other quality hosting companies out there, sadly, Matt Heaton’s many companies are not among them.

    Do yourself a favor and escape from this Man’s grasp before he has a chance to hurt you.
