You can’t do that?!

Do you know how many times in my life I have been told that I can’t do something?

I have never been a great listener. That has worked to my favor and hurt me at the same time. I never really cared what anyone thought of me. It is a very difficult task to say or write something that offends me. Yet, those same characteristics were what allowed me to try and do things in the face of “reason” from friends and family.

I am just writing to give some encouragement to those that need the last straw to get them going. People are sedentary by nature. Change isn’t a comfortable situation for most people. I have been cautioned by many people for choices that I have made, and I have been told by others that my chances for success were limited at best. Some people opined out of genuine concern, while others did it out of a sense of resentment that I was trying something that they knew they wouldn’t/couldn’t try themselves.

The simply fact is that you CAN DO IT! Whatever it is you are trying, with enough effort and desire you can make it happen. I am not suggesting that you take unreasonable risks, but all efforts that are truely worth it take some risk. Don’t give in to the nay sayers. They are the “do nots” of the world.

Now people will look at my situation and say I got where I am because of “chance” or “luck”. Rubbish! Sure, nothing is guaranteed, but I would have no chance of success if I didn’t get out and try. That is what I want you to do. Get out and try, and put the reaons why you can’t behind you. Sometimes all it takes is someone to say they believe in you.

Thanks,
Matt Heaton / President Bluehost.com

Your last two posts (“can do” and “shine”) fit well together. In fact they’re probably the same.

The point is, as you say in the “shine” post, to get into the right situation and then you’ll not worry what others think is possible.

And that one is quite simple and hard at the same time. It’s simply doing something that really interests you and which you love to do.

All else will fall into place.

I completely agree. What you said reminds me of Winston Churchill’s speech before parliament when he stated that hard times were ahead, in fact many long months of them.

“We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.”

are you trying to sell hosting packages? :D jk i don’t care about most people’s opinions, but i do care about opinions of those who i trust. and i agree that nothing can be done without taking risk, but i like having a plan b in case that something unexpected happens :)

Thanks. As someone who has lots of big dreams and is often cautioned, I really needed that today. I am in a sitting on my butt in a safe job phase, but looking back I can see that when I went for what I wanted, as scary as it was, I got the greatest rewards.

    Thanks again.

Getting all philosophical on us? Must be your age! ;)

It is reassuring though to hear that you do care about your company. There are a lot of shysters out there only in this industry for the profits. I hope bluehost will never be one of them.

  6. Hi Matt, just wanted to give you some feedback on your operation. I’m shopping for a new hosting provider and need to get all my current sites files, databases, subdomains, etc transferred to whomever I select. I just got off a 10+ minute chat with one of your support people and even though he was earnest and sincere in attempting to help me, I didn’t get what I needed to convince me to go with your service. Perhaps an FAQ somewhere on your site for prospects like me that have an existing site that needs to be moved in its entirety, not just having the DNS rehomed. Off to continue shopping for a host…

Hi. Just a suggestion: Spell check your blog posts. You have grammar errors in all of your posts. Some of the errors are correctly spelled words that are not properly used in the sentence, for example: “The simply fact is that you CAN DO IT!” — It should be “The simple fact is that you CAN DO IT!”

I felt it was a nice thing to do by notifying you. Have a nice day.

Hi Matt, that’s a great piece of advice. As the great Donald Trump says, you must follow your gut feeling, but also be a good listener and make your own thought of it. Also, we are made to ‘Can Do’ instead of ‘Can’t Do’

Thanks for the encouragement… and for putting into words what so many of us are thinking.
My best to you and yours,

    Matt,
I absolutely love your posts. I’m impressed by your hard work, you heart to take care of your people (both staff and clients), and your commitment to honesty.

So this is just a post to let you know I’m cheering you on. YOU can do it.

Two quotes to add here that I thought might encourage you:

“No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.” Helen Keller

    and

“Do or do not, there is no try” Yoda

    Happy New Year!

    Matt:

I read your entry about the frustration with XO and the fact you are now the largest consumer of bandwidth in the state of Utah. I wanted to introduce myself to you, as I am the Regional sales director for wholsale data solutions in this part of the world. I invite you to consider calling me the next time you need a bandwidth upgrade. I’m not going to pitch you on the blog, seeing as it’s public, but I will say, you will not be disappointed in the single ASN globally, private peering only, and extremely aggressive perMb rates. Please call me at 303.482.1591, or email me at the above address.

I look forward to hearing from you.

You seem like a pretty cool guy there Mr. Matt. People told me/ tell me the same thing and then out comes my rebellious persona. Thanks for the great host btw.

I am enjoying all of mattheaton.com and especially your comments in “You Can’t Do That!” I am credited with 78 birthdays and looking back (way back) I have managed to achieve most of what I wanted to do and most of those things I was cautioned to not even try. Why didn’t I listen?

Anyway, here I am trying to learn computereze so that I can start a new career and supplement my supplemental income with your help. If nothing else, I’m having fun with it and once again I find myself not listening to those well intentioned negative comments. After all, I wouldn’t get anything done if I believed that I’m too old to mow the lawn, shovel the snow or cut the mustard. And, even though a six pack of anything is a potential life time supply for me I’ll take each day without concern as I always have and enjoy doing it. Thank you Matt.

Just one more comment about: At Bluehost we always try and hire enough people to do the job right and fast. With well over 100,000 current customers that is sometimes a very daunting task, but one that we consider paramount to our ongoing success. We have hired more than 30 members of our team in the last 4 months, and will probably hire another 20-30 in the next 3-4 months. As always thanks for your business!

And to think you’ve done all of this inspite of making grammatical errors. Having the same habit, I’m more encouraged than ever.

Hi Matt, Minny from Norway here. I came over your posts by a mistake and liked them very much. I am just in the middel of the “breaking out “and “going for bigger goals” fase, and of course, as could be expected, i am now getting all kinds of negative out bursts from several friends and family members. At first i was quite sad and unwell with these reactions, but after a short adjustment of feelings i desided to continue my new road and care less about the opinion of these limited people. I do however listen very carefully to anyone talking about taking chances and reaching for the stars.

Thank you for your nice words, i will most certainly let the inspiration they give me propell me even futher ahead!

    Minny
